Shatavari - Queen of Herbs
/This gorgeous well-loved root herb asparagus racemosus known as shatavari in Sanskrit is commonly found throughout India. She is considered the queen of herbs due to her natural adaptogenic and sattvic (pure essence) nature and powerful reproductive tonifying properties, making her an ally for many conditions. As the name suggests she is part of the asparagus family.
If you want to feel like the empress that you are as you go through the changes in your body during menopause and peri-menopause this is for sure one of the go-to herbs as it can help with so many menopausal symptoms. As an adaptogen, shatavari helps the body to cope with internal stress.
I use shatavari for many clients and their issues have ranged from, amenorrhoea. amenorrhoea, PSM, infertility, endometriosis, peri-menopause, menopause, pregnancy and nursing mothers.
Shatavari means ‘the plant with 100 roots’ or ‘she who has a 100 husbands’ which alludes to its powerful impact of bringing strength and rejuvenation to the reproductive organs and gentle rebalance to the hormones. Shatavari has a cooling, sweet, bitter soothing, nourishing and unctuous quality that deeply penetrate many systems by bringing balance to vata and pitta.
Benefits:
Balances vata and pitta reproductive issues
Restores vitality to the nervous system
Rejuvenating to ojas
Strengthens immunity
Improves muscle strength
Promotes love and devotion
Supports healthy sexual appetite (for both men and women)
Supports the power to create a new life
A powerful whole-body tonic (rasayana)
Helps in restoring digestive health
Can be used to support high cholesterol, infections, diabetes and more
Shatavari can be taken in various ways, but my favourite way is with some hot milk at bedtime. It can be taken with ghee, as a tea or as a liquid extract.
It is worth noting when we are using herbs like shatavari for healing that traditionally, these plants would only be harvested as needed from the wild in India. As demand increases for shatavari’s benefits, we are creating a widespread issue of overexploitation many plants are becoming endangered to the commercial drivers.
I strongly recommend consulting a practitioner for dosage and safe use and recommend buying from a verified source:
